The Style Room

The Right Colors For You

Figuring out the right color hues that work well with your skin tone could very well be a daunting task for some. Most guys are beginning to come to the realization that if they were to add color outside of their comfort zone, it would give them an extra boost in the style department.

Now I know what you may be thinking, saying to yourself that it’s not that difficult when trying to figure out what colours work best with your skin tone... Or you do not have to be a rocket scientist etc. I tell ya this much, If you want to save some time in the shopping department, you’ll then understand that knowing this one key rule will give you exactly what you need when it comes to knowing the colours that will surely compliment you.

The one little trick you can do is take a look at your forearm. In order to best judge which colors should form the core of your wardrobe, you’ll need to determine whether your skin is pale, medium/olive, or dark. When you are done figuring that out, you are one step closer to finding the colors that work for you.

Fair/Pale skin
If you are a fella that fall into this category, then hues that contrast with your skin tone will bring some color to your complexion. Darker colors are the way to go. Dark gray, brown, burgundy, navy and bolder shades of blue will all work well with this complexion.

Knowing that you have fair/pale skin, you most definitely want to stay away from the pastel shades or bright colors,  they will only wash you out.  Neutrals are a no go as well… it is best to go with shades such as camel, sand and or slate
gray.

                                     Olive/medium skin
Olive skin tends to have yellow and brown undertones, so when you’re shopping, think of colors that will compliment these hues. Flattering colors include black, nude, beige, khaki, navy, and dark reds. Dark brown, lime green and olive-green are not flattering for olive skin tones. Also stay clear of gold and oranges. These colors can make your skin look sallow. Take care not to wear anything that matches too closely with your skin's hue.

Darker Skin
Much like those with medium skin, guys with darker skin can pretty much try their hand at any color without any worry. Fellas with darker skin… the world is yours. The color of your skin is perfectly positioned to pair well with the vast majority of hues and shades.

Warm colors (yellow, pink, orange etc.) you should know that you are on the right path! For men with dark skin, pastel colors are the best along with bright, warm colours such as red or orange. They bring out your natural shine and make your skin glow. Going very bright (such as really pale yellow) or very shiny is not recommended though. In this case, your clothes will stand out too much and your features won’t be visible.

When it’s all said and done, if you are ever given a compliment on what you are wearing and the colors within your outfit, use that as something that will help you gauge which colors show you in your best light.

Recipe of the Month
Pizza.  Who doesn’t love it?  The only problem is if you are working out and trying to get or keep your body tight and right you can’t eat it the traditional way all the time.  I have a solution. Low carb pizza.  Don’t let the (low carb) part fool you.  This pizza packs some flavor.

Vegetable Pizza (Low Carb)
Serves 2

Ingredients
1 Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Pizza Crust
½-3/4  cup of pizza sauce (I made my own sauce, recipe will be below, or you can use the sauce in the jar)
¼ cup prepared pesto sauce (I used Barilla)
1 cup or more of Mozzarella Cheese (2% or skim milk mozzarella)
¼-1/2 cup each of vegetables (I used zucchini, squash, tomatoes, mushrooms and red onions)
Vegetable seasoning (McCormick)
Cracked black pepper
Kosher Salt (sprinkle)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Cut up vegetables and set aside. Put the pizza crust in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes and turn over and bake for an additional 10-12 minutes.  For a crispier crust put the crust on a rack and place it over the pizza pan.  Having the crust elevated helps it to be crispier.  Put pizza sauce on the pizza and spread it to the edge.  Top the pizza sauce with the pesto and swirl it around until well mixed.  Season sauce mixture with vegetable seasoning.  Top with the mozzarella cheese.  Add vegetables and sprinkle with vegetable seasoning, cracked black pepper and a pinch of the kosher salt.  Place in over bake until cheese is melted (about 10 minutes). Cut and enjoy.
Even though this is a vegetable pizza you can easily add a meat of your choice to it.  I would use no more than 5-6 toppings on this pizza.
This pizza goes great with crispy baked dry rubbed wings or baked wings tossed in your favorite sauce

Pizza Sauce Recipe

Makes about 4 cups (You can make the sauce the day before and let the flavors marry)

Ingredients
1 32-ounce can whole or diced tomatoes
6 to 8 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar, plus more to taste
Salt
Fresh-cracked pepper
2 TB Olive oil
2TB Italian Seasoning
2 TB chopped onion

Equipment
Blender or food processor
Muffin tin, if freezing
Freezer bag or container, if freezing
Instructions
1.      Combine the tomatoes, garlic, vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, some black pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil in a blender or food processor. Use both the tomatoes and their juices, or drain the tomatoes for a slightly thicker and more concentrated sauce.
2.      Puree the sauce: Blend the ingredients until they're completely pureed. Stop the blender and scrape down the sides as needed.
3.      Give the sauce a taste: Taste your sauce, and add more salt, fresh-cracked pepper, or olive oil to taste. Blend a few more seconds to combine.
4.      Use the pizza sauce: This sauce is ready to be used as is — no cooking required. Just spoon it onto a round of pizza dough and use the back of the spoon to smooth it out. This amount of sauce makes enough for eight medium pizzas, depending on how much sauce you like on your pizza.
5.      Refrigerate unused sauce for up to a week.

6.      Freeze any extra pizza sauce for up to 3 months: Spoon any unused sauce into muffin tins. Freeze until solid, then pop the frozen cubes out of the mold and transfer to a freezer container. Thaw overnight before using on pizza, or microwave the cubes in 30-second bursts until they melt into a sauce.
